A decade ago, most researchers waited months, sometimes years, before their work saw the light of day. Today, a growing number are choosing a different path: posting their findings as preprints, often before a single peer reviewer has looked at them. This shift has sparked real debate in the scientific community, and the answer to whether you should join in is not as simple as yes or no.
What Exactly Is a Preprint?
A preprint is a complete draft of a research paper shared publicly, usually on a dedicated server like arXiv, bioRxiv, or SSRN, before it goes through formal peer review. Anyone can read it, comment on it, or build on it. The author retains the right to submit the same work to a journal afterward, and many do exactly that.
Why Researchers Are Embracing Them
The appeal is easy to understand. Peer review, while valuable, can be slow. In fast moving fields like genomics or machine learning, a year long wait can mean the difference between being first and being forgotten. Preprints let researchers claim priority quickly and get feedback from a much wider audience than the two or three reviewers a journal typically assigns.
There is also a transparency argument. Preprints make science more open. Anyone, not just subscribers to expensive journals, can read the work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this openness proved crucial, as findings on transmission and treatment spread within days rather than months, helping public health officials respond faster.
Career incentives matter too. Job seekers and grant applicants often need to show a track record, and a preprint can serve as proof of productivity while a paper works its way through review.
The Risks Worth Considering
Speed comes with tradeoffs. Peer review, for all its flaws, catches errors, weak methodology, and overstated claims before they reach a wide audience. A flawed preprint can spread misinformation, especially if picked up by journalists or social media without context. Retracted or heavily revised preprints can also create confusion about what the “real” version of a study actually says.
There is also the matter of reputation. Some fields and some senior colleagues still view preprints with suspicion, treating them as unfinished or unvetted work. Posting early could, in certain communities, affect how your work is perceived before it has been validated.
Finding the Right Balance
So should you post before peer review? The honest answer depends on your field, your career stage, and the nature of your findings. If you work in a fast moving area where timing matters, and your methods are solid, a preprint can help you share knowledge sooner and gather useful feedback. If your findings are preliminary, sensitive, or likely to attract public attention beyond the scientific community, it may be worth waiting for the extra scrutiny that peer review provides.
What seems clear is that preprints are not going away. They have become a permanent fixture of how modern research gets shared, discussed, and improved. The question for most researchers is no longer whether preprints belong in science, but how to use them responsibly alongside the traditional review process.
